2010 FURMAN ENGAGED!
Celebration of Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities
Friday April 16, 2010, Furman hosted the 2nd annual FURMAN
ENGAGED! celebration of undergraduate research, internships, scholarship and creative activities. This annual event (
2010 program),
catalyzed by Furman's HHMI-BRIDGES award and sponsored by Furman’s
Office of Undergraduate Research and Internships, showcased over 170
poster and internship presentations, 45 oral sessions (with nearly 250
students presenting), numerous musical performances as well as the U.S.
Premiere of “Inuksuit”. The composer, John Luther Adams, presented a
pre-concert lecture and well over 250 audience members
were treated to a unique and delightful production (facilitated at the
amphitheatre and surrounding grounds) by over 50 percussionists from
Furman and the surrounding region.
All regular University classes were suspended in support of this effort.
This ambitious program solicited the support and full participation of
the entire Furman community including faculty, staff, and most
importantly the Furman student body. The event, coinciding with one of
Admissions’ Accepted Student Days enabled a large number of prospective
students to witness the creativity and scholarship that is found through
the Furman student body.
Over
20 middle school students that are part of our HHMI mentoring program
joined their Furman mentors for the day. In addition to a visit to the
Shi Center for Sustainability and a Planetarium show, the visiting
students were able to spend time with their mentors at the research and
internship posters.
The 3rd annual Furman
Engaged! Program will be held on Friday April 8,
2011 with all University classes again being suspended on that day to
allow full participation by the Furman community. Admissions plans to
again connect one of their Accepted Student Day weekends with this
event.

On Friday April 3, 2009, Furman hosted the first-ever FURMAN
ENGAGED!
celebration of undergraduate research, internships, scholarship and
creative activities. This exciting event, catalyzed by Furman's
HHMI-BRIDGES award and sponsored by Furman’s
Office of Undergraduate Research and Internships,
took the form of a campus wide showcase involving presentations,
displays and performances from all disciplines including the Natural
and Social Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts.
All regular University classes were suspended in support of
this effort. The HHMI-BRIDGES program solicited the support and full
participation of the entire Furman community including faculty, staff,
and most importantly the Furman student body. High school students
involved in Furman’s STEM outreach initiatives, as well as prospective
students and their families, were also invited and encouraged to attend
this annual event.
We kicked off Furman's inaugural Furman
Engaged! celebration by hosting 1988 Nobel Prize recipient in Physics,
Dr. Leon Lederman,
who presented a plenary lecture in Shaw Hall (Younts Conference Center)
on April 2, 2009. Dr. Lederman is an internationally distinguished
scientist and science educator; it was indeed an honor to have him as
our invited guest during Furman's year of the Sciences and to assist in
introducting the Furman
Engaged! Celebration.
