Originally from Aiken, SC, I received my BA from Duke University in Psychology and a Certificate in Markets and Management. Like many undergraduates I had no idea what I wanted to do in life! Thankfully I was hired as a Health Educator for Palmetto Health in Columbia, SC and found my passion. Not only did I realize how much I loved learning about health and wellness, but I also loved teaching people about it and how to live healthier lives. In an effort to gain more knowledge, I received my Master’s in Public Health from the University of South Carolina in Health Promotion, Education and Behavior. I also received a certificate in School Health. During my Master’s program I worked for the Prevention Research Center studying the effects of physical activity in 6th graders. I also worked for Lexington Medical Center where I originally learned how to teach group exercise-another favorite hobby of mine. I am certified through ACSM, NSCA, AFAA and have attended many fitness certifications and conferences.
After school I was fortunate to work in corporate wellness for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. With a team of only 9 people, we serviced nearly 12,000 employees with fitness centers, group exercise, personal training, health screenings, flu shots, blood drives, etc. It was a great job, but my husband took a job at Greenville Hospital System so we moved to the Upstate. I got a job in Michelin’s wellness department until my son (William) was born in August, 2008. I decided to stay at home with him and subsequently had Patrick last October. While staying at home, I continued to teach group fitness for the Life Center at Greenville Hospital.
I began teaching for Furman in August, 2011. I’ve loved every moment and hope to continue helping these capable, eager students become healthy, responsible adults.
