Major Requirements

The English major consists of at least ten courses and must include each of the following:
  • ENG-150 Interpretive Strategies
  • One course from Early Traditions: ENG-301 Literature of the Later Fourteenth Century, 302 Literature of Early Modern Britain, 303 Early Modern Drama, 304 Restoration and Eighteenth-Century English Literature, 307 Literature Before Print, or 311 Settling: Writing in America to 1830 
  • One course from Kinds of Literature: ENG-305 British Romantic Literature, 320 Eighteenth-Century Novel, 321 Victorian Novel, 331 American Novel from Its Beginnings to World War 1, 335 Immersion Journalism, 374 Stardom and Identity, or 422 Literature of the South 
  • One course from Literature and Global Society: ENG- 312 Emerson to Dickinson, 323 Global Novel since 1960, 423 Literature of the Irish Renaissance, 434 What is Postcolonialism?, 435 Writing Africa: Culture and Politics in African Literature, or 454 Caribbean Cosmopolitanisms 
  • One course from Writers and Their Worlds: ENG- 306 Victorian Literature and Culture, 332 American Novel from World War 1 to the Present, 403 Faulkner, 404 Major Figures in Early Modern British Literature, 412 Autobiographical Lives and Life, 418 Shakespeare's Europe/England's Renaissance, or 420 Animals in the Middle Ages
  • One course from Theory in Practice: ENG-362 English Language: How it Works, 452 Literary Feminisms, 453 Slave Narrative to Slave Novel, 461 Critical and Cultural Theory, 462 The Stage, Social Struggle, and Theory, 471 South Asian Cultural Studies: Literature and Film
  • Elective courses in the major, totaling at least 12 credits
  • ENG-475 Senior Seminar
To graduate with a major in English, a student must have a grade point average of at least 2.00 in a group of courses that satisfies the departmental requirements. Students may count only one section of ENG 111 Texts and Meaning towards the English major.
