Beyond Furman

Looking Toward Your Future

Furman's English majors pursue many different careers. In recent years, majors have attended top graduate and professional schools such as Cambridge University, Columbia University, Emory University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, and the Medical College of Charleston in fields as diverse as arts administration, post-secondary education, journalism, law, medicine, and social service work. Many have received fellowships or assistantships to support their studies.

Successful graduates of the Furman program in English include:

Matt Martin, whose Rhodes scholarship prepared him to become an English professor and Know Professor of Humanities at Wesleyan College.

Marshall Frady, the late journalist and biographer of such notable figures as Billy Graham and Jesse Jackson.

Ann Green, Pulitzer Prize-winning editor at the Alabama-Journal.

Tommy Hays, novelist whose second novel became a Book of the Month Club selection.

Michael Garcia, who established his own writing consulting firm in Atlanta, GA.

Jennifer Thomas, Head of the English Department at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts.
