Internships are an important component of Furman’s engaged learning emphasis. Chairs support internship activities by acting as a liaison with prospective intern mentors in the community and with Susan Zeiger, Furman’s internship coordinator. In some departments Chairs appoint faculty members to act as internship coordinators for their departments.

As Chairs and department members become aware of internship opportunities in the community, it is helpful to pass this information along to Ms. Zeiger, who maintains a database of prospective internships.

Occasionally, alumni, Trustees, or high-profile university friends seek Furman students to act as interns. In other circumstances, an internship opportunity itself is of particular importance because it represents a new and potentially ongoing opportunity for Furman and its students. In either case a Chair might assist the internship coordinator by screening student applications from the department or helping to find suitable candidates to fill the internship.
