Enrollment Capacities

Default capacity is the number of students a course can typically enroll. It should be set at the greatest number of students that could be enrolled for the course on the first day of class for it to remain pedagogically effective. Typical default capacities at Furman are as follows: introductory courses (25-35), lecture courses (25), seminars (15). Enrollment capacities for any section can be modified to meet specific needs for the term, instructor or planned facility use.

Enrollment gating (seat rationing by class standing), enrollment by invitation (direct enrollment typically prior to ICE), instructor or departmental consent (permission required), prerequisites (course-based restrictions requiring successful completion of a certain course or courses), and other enrollment restrictions (attribute-based restrictions requiring a declared major or class standing) are all mechanisms that can be employed to limit registration in a particular course section.
