Non-Major Courses (GER)

General Education Requirements (GERs)

Students are required to take two first year seminars, which mustinclude at least one writing seminar. Also students are required tocomplete eleven courses meeting core requirements.

Seminars

First Year Seminar (FYS): small discussion-centered seminars encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning

First Year Writing (FYW):  explicitly devote significant pedagogicalattention to the improvement of the student’s writing and thedevelopment of information fluency.

Thirteen Courses

Natural World and Natural World with Lab: studentsmust take two courses in the empirical study of natural world, at leastone of which with a separate laboratory component.

Human Behavior (HB): two courses in the empirical study of human behavior and social relations.

Historical Analysis (HA): A course using historical analysis to study past human interactions.

Textual Analysis (TA): a course in the critical, analytical interpretation of texts.

• Visual and Performance Arts (VP): a course (or four credit equivalent) in the visual and performing arts.

Mathematical and Formal Reasoning (MR): a course thatconstitutes this category requires students to master rigoroustechniques of formal reasoning and to apply the techniques of bothformal reasoning and techniques in the mathematical interpretation ofideas.

Foreign Language: a course in a foreign language

• Ultimate Question (UQ): a course considering ultimatequestions invites students to engage metaphysical, religious andethical questions in a direct and explicit way.

Mind and Body (MB): a course emphasizing the importance of the body and mind.

Natural Environment (NE): a course addressing humans and the natural environment.

• World Cultures (WC): a course focusing on world cultures
