So what can we make of Furman’s engaged approach to learning, and how can this approach translate into success? Because the Communication Studies Department at Furman provides theoretically grounded courses and promotes extracurricular activities and internships, students gain two invaluable consequences: knowledge and experience. Thus, they are prepared to enter the wide world that awaits them after college.
Communication studies alumni are spread across the globe and working in an impressive array of careers. One such Furman graduate, Jessica Lightburn, now works at the White House. Courtney Dotson works for an advertising firm in New York City. Hollye Ferguson Stigler works with Southern Progress Corporation, the parent company of
Southern Living Magazine, which is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, with offices throughout the United States. Both Deborah Wells and Alfons Simons are currently in graduate school at Duke University. Lauren Johnson works as a reporter for News 13 in Orlando, Florida. No matter where these alumni end up, they serve as an example for other Furman students to emulate, and the mark they leave on a particular point on the map is almost always a mark of success.
