Research

The Business and Accounting Department's Summer Scholars program is designed to encourage collaborative research between faculty and students. During spring term, students apply for a limited number of summer research projects selected for their scholarly merit. The students who qualify as Summer Scholars are matched to appropriate projects where they work one-on-one with a faculty member. (Participating students may not attend summer school or hold other jobs and will receive a stipend of several thousand dollars.) All Furman students are eligible to apply, but priority is given to Business Administration and Accounting majors with strong academic qualifications.

In the past, students have conducted research in the fields such as marketing and finance. The Summer Scholars program gives students the opportunity to learn more about the areas of business in which they are interested while working with professors outside of the classroom.

"Furman University is wonderful if you don't know what you want to do after school, and even better if you do. After a marketing course this year with Dr. Underwood, my interests in business, writing, and psychology were solidified- I knew I wanted to pursue a career in marketing. Furman-sponsored research with my professor has given me invaluable research and writing experience, as well as a chance to get published and differentiate myself from other undergraduate students.

"We are currently researching sustainable development, as well as the macro forces, challenges, and issues driving this trend. The research illustrates how Caterpillar, Inc. is successfully addressing these issues by highlighting the company's leading global position on sustainable development and their ongoing strategic efforts to successfully integrate the sustainable development paradigmwithin every stage in their business model." - Katy Wynn, 2007 Summer Scholar
