Japan Summer Experience -
APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL MAY 2, 2013
The Japan Summer Experience (JSE) is an exclusive opportunity for incoming freshmen to experience one of the world’s most vibrant countries and meet new classmates and teachers before arriving on campus in the fall. All incoming freshmen are eligible to apply in the Spring for one of the twelve fully funded JSE scholarships that cover all of the expenses for their two-week study tour to Japan in June and July. Successful applicants are notified the first week of May. In exchange for this rare opportunity, students commit to two semesters of Japanese language study during their freshman year and a First Year Seminar on Japan.
The Japan Summer Experience is funded by a grant from the Japan Foundation and aims to engage students not only in books and ideas, but also in people and places. The program will run as follows: The selected students will travel together in June to Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka and Tokyo where they will have abundant opportunities to experience a wide array of both old and new sites.
Participants can anticipate synthesizing their diverse experiences through lectures and conversations with Furman University professors and professors and students at Waseda University, Furman’s exchange partner and one of the top universities in Japan.
One of the objectives of the Japan Summer Experience is to provide early experiences with Asia so that students will have time to investigate Japanese or Asian Studies in depth during their tenure at Furman. All students who participate in JSE will take two semesters of Japanese language their freshmen year. Further language study beyond one year is available but is absolutely optional. JSE participants will also be registered for a First Year Seminar exploring current issues in Japan. The language courses and the seminar meet general education requirements of the university, and therefore should fit quite readily into any chosen area of study.
