Resolution Approved by the Board of Trustees
Saturday, October 30, 2010:
Whereas, commencing with the announcement of his appointment as President, Rod Smolla has spent nine months encouraging a wide-ranging conversation among all elements of the Furman community regarding Furman’s identity, values, and aspirations for the future; and
Whereas, the Board of Trustees recognizes the importance of commencing immediately a strategic planning process to chart Furman’s future, and a sense that the present energy and morale of the University community is strong; and
Whereas, the Board of Trustees believes that the timing is therefore ripe for the immediate undertaking of a strategic planning process, and that the broader University community will welcome and embrace the commencement and expeditious completion of such a process.
BE IT RESOLVED, that the board of Trustees charges President Rod Smolla to immediately lead a strategic planning process, which should (1) be inclusive and participatory, including all appropriate participation by the University faculty, staff, and students; (2) be focused on the guiding values and principles that should animate the University’s future programs and policies; and (3) be disciplined and focused in its articulation of the University’s priorities; and (4) result in a presentation of a plan to the Board of Trustees at its April 2011 meeting.
